Active Bitcoin Nodes
Bitcoin nodes are the fundamental building blocks of the Bitcoin network. They validate, store, and propagate transactions and blocks, ensuring the technical decentralization of the system. Each node maintains a full or partial copy of the blockchain and operates independently within the peer-to-peer network.
Nodes play a critical role in maintaining consensus and enforcing the rules of the Bitcoin protocol. Without nodes, the network would not be able to verify transactions or maintain its decentralized nature.
Basic requirements for running a node:
- đģ Computer or server with a permanent internet connection
- đž Sufficient storage space (Full Node > 700 GB, Pruned Node significantly less)
- đ Reliable upload and download bandwidth

The values shown below for the geographic distribution of Bitcoin nodes are estimates and refer exclusively to nodes that are publicly reachable and can be assigned to a specific country. The actual number of Bitcoin nodes is significantly higher than the sum of the country-level values listed here, as many nodes are operated behind Tor, VPNs, or firewalls and therefore cannot be clearly geolocated.
Such non-publicly reachable nodes are not directly captured by most counting methods, but are included in estimates of the total number of Bitcoin nodes.
